Michinoku Performing Arts Festival
Michinoku Performing Arts Festival (みちのく芸能祭り, Michinoku Geinō Matsuri) in Kitakami is one of Iwate’s most vibrant events, held during the first weekend of August. For three full days, the city comes alive with sacred dances like Onikenbai (sword-wielding demon dance), Shishi Odori (deer dance), Kagura (spiritual dances), and the rare wolf dance. These performances, requiring years of practice, are spread across multiple venues like the station plaza, Kitakami Suwa Shrine, and streets near Sakurano Department Store.
The highlight on Saturday night is the “Daigunbu” group performance with over 100 dance troupes moving in unison. On Sunday, the river near Tenshochi lights up with paper lanterns floating on water, followed by a grand fireworks show. For the best view, riverside seats are available with advance tickets. If you're nearby, plan ahead — this unique cultural experience blends tradition, music, and festival energy in one unforgettable weekend.
