In Kitakami, you can walk to Tenshochi Park in about 20 minutes from Kitakami Station, or reach the Michinoku Folklore Village in 45 minutes. A ferry runs to the park during cherry blossom season, but it won’t operate in 2025 due to safety concerns.

Kitakami Travel Tips
Kitakami (北上) is best known for its breathtaking cherry blossoms at Tenshochi Park, where over 10,000 trees bloom along the Kitakami River. Around late April, the two-kilometer path transforms into a stunning tunnel of white and pink blossoms. Visitors can walk beneath the flowering canopy or explore food stalls and seasonal festivities at both ends of the path. Though the popular riverboat ride isn’t running this season, the views from the riverside remain unforgettable.
Right next to the park, Michinoku Folklore Village takes you back in time with 30 preserved farmhouses and buildings from across the Tohoku Region, nestled in nature. These traditional structures are open for viewing, giving insights into historical rural life. Near the entrance, the Kitakami City Museum showcases exhibits on Buddhist art, natural history, and local heritage—offering a deeper look into the area's rich culture.
