In Usuki, the two main attractions are the old samurai district in the city center and the famous Usuki Stone Buddhas, located about five kilometers southwest of the town. The samurai district is easily accessible by walking from either Usuki Station or Kami-Usuki Station.
To reach the stone Buddhas, buses from Usuki Station are limited (only running every 1–3 hours), so taking a taxi (around 2,000 yen one way) or renting a car is more convenient. You’ll find a Toyota rental car office near Kami-Usuki Station, but there are additional rental options in Beppu, Oita, and at Oita Airport. If you prefer cycling, you can borrow a bicycle for free at Usuki Station.

Usuki Travel Tips
Usuki (臼杵), a charming town nestled on the east coast of Oita Prefecture, offers a captivating blend of history, art, and natural beauty. Among its most fascinating attractions are the stone Buddha statues carved into the cliffs—a feature that sets Usuki apart from other Buddhist sites in Japan. These awe-inspiring statues, which date from the 12th to 14th centuries, are masterpieces of craftsmanship and spiritual significance. Their tranquil expressions and intricate carvings provide a powerful glimpse into the region's rich cultural and religious history, making them a must-see for anyone interested in ancient Japanese art.
Beyond the Buddha statues, Usuki’s city center preserves much of its historical charm, offering an immersive experience of its past as a former samurai town. Strolling through the cobblestone streets of the Usuki samurai district is like stepping back in time, with well-preserved traditional buildings still in use today as vibrant shops, cafes, and museums. This unique blend of history, artistry, and authentic old-world ambiance makes Usuki a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to explore the deeper layers of Japan’s heritage.
