The Usuki Stone Buddhas (臼杵石仏, Usuki Sekibutsu) are a remarkable collection of Buddha statues carved into a cliff just five kilometers southwest of Usuki’s city center. Unlike most Buddha statues in Japan, which are traditionally made of wood or metal, these statues are unique in being carved directly into the soft volcanic rock of Mount Aso, located nearby. Dating back to the late Heian Period (794-1185), they are the only stone Buddha statues in Japan recognized as national treasures. The statues are divided into four clusters, each showcasing intricately detailed carvings that depict various Buddhist figures. These clusters are easily accessible by a short walk along a paved trail, allowing visitors to explore the site within 30 minutes. The serene setting of the statues, surrounded by lush greenery, enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the area.

Due to the soft nature of the volcanic rock and the high humidity in the region, the statues are susceptible to erosion over time. To help preserve these cultural treasures, protective shelters have been constructed to shield them from natural elements. Just a five-minute walk from the Stone Buddhas is Mangatsuji Temple, a tranquil spot that offers visitors a chance to see additional stone sculptures. Among these is a statue of the Buddhist priest who is believed to have created the Usuki Stone Buddhas, adding a layer of historical significance to the visit. The combination of the statues, the surrounding nature, and the nearby temple makes this site a must-visit for those interested in Japan’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
