Lake Chuzenji (Chuzenjiko)
Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖, Chūzenjiko) is a serene and scenic lake located in the mountains above Nikko, at the foot of Mount Nantai, a sacred volcano. Formed 20,000 years ago when the volcano’s eruption blocked the valley, the lake is mostly surrounded by lush forests and is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. The small town of Chuzenji Onsen sits on the eastern shore and is home to the stunning Kegon Waterfall.
The lake is particularly beautiful during autumn, from mid to late October, when vibrant autumn colors fill the surroundings. In the summer, its high altitude offers a cool climate, making it a popular destination for relaxation. Visitors can explore the lake’s shores via walking trails or enjoy the view from sightseeing boats and the Chuzenjiko Skyline, a scenic route offering panoramic views of the lake and mountains.
