Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖, Chūzenjiko), nestled high in the mountains above Nikko, is a tranquil haven at the base of the sacred Mount Nantai. This picturesque lake was formed over 20,000 years ago when an eruption from Mount Nantai blocked a valley, creating the stunning body of water surrounded by lush forests. The charming town of Chuzenji Onsen lies on the eastern shore, offering visitors a peaceful retreat, as well as the breathtaking Kegon Waterfall, one of Japan’s most famous cascades. The serene landscape and rich natural beauty make it a perfect destination for nature lovers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

The lake is renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage, typically peaking from mid to late October, when the surrounding forests are ablaze with colors of red, orange, and gold. In the summer, the cool climate at this high altitude provides a refreshing escape from the heat, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. Visitors can enjoy the lake’s scenic beauty by walking along the shores on well-maintained trails, or they can take a sightseeing boat for a tranquil cruise. Another highlight is the Chuzenjiko Skyline, a panoramic route offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, making it a must-see for anyone in the area.
