Kegon Waterfall is just a short walk from the Chuzenji Onsen bus terminal. The bus ride from JR or Tobu Nikko Station to Chuzenji Onsen takes about 50 minutes and costs 1,250 yen. It is included in the Nikko All Area Pass. Alternatively, you can purchase a 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Chuzenji Onsen for 2,300 yen at Tobu Nikko Station.
Kegon Waterfall (Kegon no taki)
Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki), one of Nikko’s most iconic landmarks, plunges nearly 100 meters into a rocky gorge, making it one of Japan’s top three waterfalls, alongside Nachi and Fukuroda waterfalls. Situated as the sole outlet for the waters of Lake Chūzenji, this majestic waterfall attracts visitors year-round, offering spectacular views from two distinct observation platforms. The free platform provides a scenic overview, while the paid platform, located at the base of the waterfall, allows for an up-close experience. To reach this vantage point, visitors can descend 100 meters via a dedicated elevator, providing an unforgettable perspective of the cascading water.
The waterfall’s beauty is amplified during the autumn months, typically from mid to late October, when the surrounding forest bursts into vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold. In winter, the falls take on a completely different charm, often freezing almost entirely, creating a serene and surreal winter landscape. For a broader view of both Kegon Waterfall and the picturesque Lake Chūzenji, visitors can take the ropeway from Akechidaira Plateau to the Akechidaira Observatory, where panoramic vistas provide stunning photo opportunities and a peaceful retreat amidst nature’s beauty.
