Takasaki Travel Tips

6 of 7 in Gunma Prefecture

Takasaki (高崎), nestled in Japan’s eastern Kanto region, bursts into color each spring when Misato Shibazakura Park comes to life. From April to May, the park’s rolling hills are blanketed with over 100,000 blooming phlox in vivid shades of pink, red, and white—creating one of the region’s most stunning seasonal displays. Just a short drive away, Mt. Haruna rises to 1,449 meters, crowned by the peaceful crater lake known as Lake Haruna. Surrounded by pine forests and home to the sacred Haruna Shrine, the lake features scenic walking trails with views of wild azaleas, calm waters, and, on clear days, even Mount Fuji in the distance.

Back in the city, Takasaki’s skyline is marked by the 41-meter-tall Byakue Kannon statue, a symbol of compassion holding a lantern of hope. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase inside for panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Nearby, Shorinzan Darumaji Temple—founded in 1697—is closely tied to the city’s cultural identity. Known for its collection of colorful daruma dolls, believed to bring good luck and perseverance, the temple invites visitors to make a wish and leave a doll among the thousands. Blending vibrant nature with deep-rooted tradition, Takasaki offers a peaceful and inspiring escape.

Getting around

In Takasaki, getting around is easy thanks to a well-connected transport network. The city’s main hub, Takasaki Station, is served by JR East, including the Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines, along with several local and regional routes. From here, it’s easy to reach nearby spots like Mt. Haruna, Misato Shibazakura Park, or even Tokyo in under an hour by bullet train. Local buses, operated by Gunma Bus and Takasaki City Bus, connect key attractions such as the Byakue Kannon statue and Shorinzan Darumaji Temple.

For short distances within the city, walking and cycling are convenient and enjoyable. The city center is compact, with restaurants, shops, and sights just 10–15 minutes apart on foot. Bicycle rentals are available near the station, and the flat terrain makes for relaxed riding. Taxis are also easy to find, especially around the station. If you plan to use buses often, consider getting a rechargeable IC card for smooth travel across different lines.
