Ken Domon Museum of Photography (土門拳記念館, Domon Ken Kinenkan)
is dedicated to the life and work of Domon Ken, one of Japan’s most influential photographers and a native of the city. Known for his honest and emotional portrayal of postwar Japan, Domon captured everything from portraits and everyday street scenes to sacred images of temples and Buddhist statues. Before his death, he donated approximately 70,000 photographs to Sakata, forming the core of the museum’s collection. The building, designed by renowned architect Taniguchi Yoshio, features a minimalist concrete design beside a peaceful pond and small waterfall, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.

Inside, the museum has two main exhibition halls with rotating displays that change each season, often centered on themes such as religious art, traditional crafts, or architectural forms. A third space highlights works by photographers connected to Domon’s legacy, offering insight into his impact on the world of Japanese photography. Visitors can experience a powerful blend of visual storytelling and tranquil surroundings, allowing for a deeper appreciation of Domon's artistic and cultural contributions.
