Honma Residence

2 of 2 in Sakata

The Honma Residence (本間家旧本邸, Honma-ke Kyūhontei), built in 1768, was originally a residence for shogunate agents visiting the region. It was later handed over to the Honma family, a wealthy merchant clan known for their role in the Edo period's shipping trade. The Honma clan's influence extended beyond business; they also advised the local lord and contributed to important community projects, including erosion control, land reclamation, and firefighting efforts. After the family’s departure in 1945, the building was repurposed as a community center and became a public historical site in 1982.

The residence features a unique blend of merchant and samurai architectural styles, reflecting the Honma family’s elevated social status. Visitors can admire the grand entrance gate, designed to symbolize the family's wealth, and explore the traditional tatami rooms with sliding doors. A standout feature is the kitchen, with its stone counters and wooden floors over an earthen base, preserving the building's historical charm. Directly across the street, the annex building, once used as a shop, now houses exhibits detailing the Honma family's history, their store, and their contributions to local firefighting efforts.
