Kamo Aquarium

4 of 4 in Sakata

Kamo Aquarium (加茂水族館, Kamo Suizokukan) is famous for its mesmerizing jellyfish displays, considered the largest in the world. Inside the atmospheric “Jellyfish Park,” dozens of species drift gracefully in softly lit, circular tanks that glow in the dark. The low lighting enhances the surreal beauty of these creatures, making it a favorite among photography lovers and families. A behind-the-scenes jellyfish nursery lets visitors observe thousands of baby jellyfish as they grow. While most signs are in Japanese, the visual experience is universally captivating.

In addition to jellyfish, the aquarium features a variety of marine life from the nearby Sea of Japan, including both saltwater and freshwater species. Outside, visitors can enjoy entertaining seal performances held several times daily in a small open-air arena. The rooftop offers a peaceful green terrace with a wooden deck and panoramic sea views. Inside, a café serves light meals and jellyfish-themed treats, while the souvenir shop offers marine-themed gifts and local products.
