Sankyo Warehouses
Sankyo Warehouses (山居倉庫, Sankyo Sōko), a historic site in Sakata, dates back to 1893 and played a crucial role in the region's rice trade. The complex features 15 traditional storehouses, many of which still function to store rice harvested from the fertile Shonai Plain, known for producing some of Japan’s best rice. The picturesque surroundings, including a charming Zelkova tree-lined path, offer visitors a peaceful stroll with views along the nearby river. At the Yume no Kura complex, visitors can explore a souvenir shop selling local crafts and produce, along with a cozy restaurant serving traditional meals.
In addition to its scenic beauty, the complex also has cultural significance, highlighted by the Historical Museum of Shonai Rice located in one of the warehouses. This museum, although currently closed, offers insights into the rice farming and production processes, with exhibits showcasing various rice crops, harvesting techniques, and the weight of the bags once carried by laborers. Despite the museum's temporary closure, the tranquil grounds and historical value continue to attract visitors looking to immerse themselves in the rich history of Sakata.
