Lake Biwa

1 of 1 in Shiga Prefecture

Lake Biwa (琵琶湖), Japan’s largest and oldest freshwater lake, lies at the heart of Shiga Prefecture and offers a scenic retreat just a short journey from Kyoto. Surrounded by forested mountains and dotted with charming lakeside towns, its 230-kilometer shoreline presents endless opportunities for exploration. Visitors can cycle the popular Biwaichi route that encircles the lake, enjoy leisurely cruises from ports like Ōtsu or Hikone, or paddle across its calm waters by kayak or canoe. In summer, swimming and lakeside barbecues draw crowds to popular spots such as Ōmi-Maiko Beach, while the cooler months invite peaceful strolls and relaxing hot spring visits.

Beyond its natural beauty, Lake Biwa is steeped in culture and history. The lake is home to iconic landmarks such as Shirahige Shrine, whose torii gate appears to float on the water, and Chikubushima Island, a revered spiritual site accessible by boat. The shores are lined with historic temples like Ishiyamadera and Mii-dera, as well as traditional towns such as Ōmihachiman and Hikone, known for their well-preserved architecture and impressive castle views. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy observing the lake’s diverse birdlife and endemic species, while those interested in sustainability can explore the Lake Biwa Museum, which highlights the region’s ecological significance and conservation efforts.
