Hikone Travel Tips

2 of 7 in Shiga Prefecture

Hikone (彦根), gracefully positioned on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, invites travelers to discover one of Japan’s most authentic historical gems. Its crown jewel, Hikone Castle, is one of only five original castles in Japan designated as a National Treasure. Built in the early 17th century, the castle offers sweeping views of the lake and town from its hilltop keep. Visitors can wander through original wooden interiors, climb steep staircases once used by samurai, and admire the elegant design of Genkyuen Garden below—a beautifully landscaped space reflecting Edo-period aesthetics, complete with koi-filled ponds, seasonal flowers, and a traditional teahouse.

Perfectly situated along the historic Tokaido route between Kyoto and Tokyo, Hikone makes for a scenic and culturally rich side trip. Beyond the castle walls lies Yume Kyōbashi Castle Road, a quaint street lined with preserved Edo-style buildings that now house local shops, cozy cafés, and craft boutiques. Sample omotenashi-style hospitality at small eateries serving Ōmi beef—one of Japan’s top wagyu brands—or sip matcha in a quiet teahouse. With its blend of lakeside tranquility, historical depth, and regional flavors, Hikone offers a slower-paced, enriching detour for travelers seeking an authentic taste of traditional Japan.
