Lake Biwa Museum (琵琶湖博物館), located on the tranquil shores of Japan’s largest freshwater lake in Shiga Prefecture, offers a rich journey through nature, culture, and science. Inside, large aquarium tanks showcase rare and native aquatic species, including the iconic Lake Biwa giant catfish. Interactive exhibits guide visitors through the lake’s diverse ecosystems—from marshlands to mountain forests—highlighting the natural wonders that have developed over millions of years. Families, school groups, and curious travelers can touch, observe, and learn through engaging, hands-on displays that make the region’s biodiversity both accessible and fun.

Beyond nature, the museum delves into the deep historical connection between people and Lake Biwa. Exhibits feature ancient tools, traditional village life, and archaeological finds, revealing how the lake has shaped local culture and livelihoods for centuries. A dedicated section on environmental issues presents modern conservation challenges and efforts to preserve the lake’s delicate ecosystem. With spacious galleries, multilingual signage, and a scenic lakeside café, the museum provides an immersive and educational experience for those exploring Shiga’s natural and cultural heritage.
