Hikone Castle
Hikone Castle (彦根城, Hikonejō), completed in 1622, is one of only five castles in Japan designated as a National Treasure and remains largely in its original form. Perched atop a low hill overlooking Lake Biwa and the surrounding town, the castle is renowned for its graceful three-story tenshu (keep), which blends multiple architectural styles—symbolizing a transitional era in Japanese castle design. Unlike many castles that have been rebuilt in concrete, Hikone’s wooden interiors and steep staircases evoke an authentic sense of the Edo period. Visitors can climb to the top of the keep for sweeping panoramic views and stroll through preserved features like the moats, turrets, and massive stone walls—testaments to the engineering brilliance of the 17th century. Just beyond the main keep lies the reconstructed Omotegoten palace, offering a glimpse into the daily life and protocol of the powerful Ii clan, who ruled the region for over 250 years.
Hikone Castle is especially popular in spring, when more than 1,000 cherry trees blanket the grounds in pink blossoms, making it one of the region’s premier hanami (flower-viewing) spots. The outer moat mirrors the seasonal colors, enhancing the castle’s fairytale-like charm. Nearby, Genkyuen Garden offers a peaceful retreat beside the inner moat. Originally designed in the 17th century as a strolling garden, it features a central pond, small islets, arched bridges, and a teahouse where guests can sip matcha while admiring Edo-period landscaping. To deepen the historical experience, the Hikone Castle Museum, located on the former palace grounds, displays artifacts from the Ii family—ranging from samurai armor and lacquerware to Noh costumes, scrolls, and musical instruments—offering a culturally rich journey for every type of traveler.
