The museum is a little outside the city, so the easiest way to go there is by rental car. It’s about 5 kilometers from the center of Kitakami.

Kitakami Oni House
Kitakami Oni House (鬼の館, Oni no Yakata) is a unique museum where Japanese monsters, known as oni, come to life. Inside, you’ll find dramatic exhibits, animated masks, and even a small theater showing folk tales in a forest-like setting. From scary horns to loud drums, the immersive experience is exciting for both adults and kids. The displays explain how these monsters play a role in keeping traditions alive and even protecting people from harm.
You'll also learn about Oni Kenbai, Kitakami’s sword-dancing monsters featured in the summer festival. As you explore, you'll encounter creatures from across Japan and even mask designs from India and Indonesia. There’s also a small archaeological museum near the entrance with ancient swords, pottery, and glass artifacts. With culture, legends, and a few surprises, it’s a fascinating place to spend a couple of hours.
