Iwaki Travel Tips

4 of 4 in Fukushima Prefecture

Iwaki (いわき), a city along the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture, is about 50 kilometers south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Despite the heavy impact of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Iwaki's tourism industry quickly rebounded, with many attractions reopening within a year. Historically, the city thrived as a coal mining hub from the 1870s to the 1960s. However, the closure of coal mines, prompted by the rise of oil as Japan's primary energy source, led Iwaki to shift toward tourism as a new economic foundation.

Today, one of Iwaki's most popular destinations is the Spa Resort Hawaiians, a Hawaiian-themed water park and resort in the Yumoto Onsen hot spring area. Opened in 1966, it offers a tropical escape with water slides, hot springs, and lively entertainment. The resort has grown into a major attraction, drawing visitors from across Japan and beyond, offering both relaxation and adventure in an inviting atmosphere with activities for all ages.

Getting around

Most attractions in Iwaki are located near Yumoto Station and Onahama port, not in the city center around Iwaki Station. Some are within walking distance of Yumoto Station, while Spa Resort Hawaiians can be reached by local or free shuttle buses. Buses also run between Onahama and Yumoto or Izumi stations.

Alternatively, renting a car is a good option, as some attractions are only accessible by infrequent buses. Rental car shops are located near Iwaki and Izumi stations.
