Iwaki Travel Tips

4 of 4 in Fukushima Prefecture

Iwaki (いわき), located along the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture, is situated about 50 kilometers south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The city has a rich history, having been a major coal mining center from the 1870s to the 1960s, playing a significant role in Japan's industrial development. However, with the rise of oil as Japan's primary energy source and the subsequent closure of coal mines, Iwaki was forced to reinvent itself. Despite the severe impact of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the city’s tourism industry displayed remarkable resilience, with many attractions reopening within a year, transforming Iwaki into a thriving destination once more.

One of the city's most popular attractions is Spa Resort Hawaiians, located in the Yumoto Onsen hot spring area. This Hawaiian-themed water park and resort, which opened in 1966, offers a tropical experience with water slides, relaxing hot springs, and vibrant entertainment. Over time, Spa Resort Hawaiians has become one of the most sought-after destinations in Iwaki, attracting both local and international visitors. It offers an ideal mix of relaxation and adventure, with facilities and activities for all ages, making it the perfect getaway for families and anyone seeking either excitement or a tranquil retreat.
