Shiramizu Amidado
Shiramizu Amidado (白水阿弥陀堂, Shiramizu Amidadō), a historic temple in Iwaki City, was built in 1160 by a member of the influential Fujiwara clan. Recognized as Fukushima Prefecture's only national treasure in 1952, it is especially notable for its rare and partially preserved Pure Land garden. This garden, a popular style during the Heian Period, is designed to reflect the Buddhist vision of the Pure Land paradise. With its tranquil pond, islands, and pavilions, it remains one of the few surviving examples of this garden style, offering a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage.
Visitors can explore the peaceful garden surrounding the pond, which provides stunning views and a serene atmosphere. An entry fee is required to view the Amidado Hall, where five wooden statues, including a lacquered Amida Buddha, are enshrined. While entry into the hall is not permitted, the temple’s historical significance and tranquil environment offer a unique cultural experience for all who visit.
