Shiramizu Amidado
Shiramizu Amidado (白水阿弥陀堂, Shiramizu Amidadō), a historic temple located in Iwaki City, was established in 1160 by a member of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Recognized as Fukushima Prefecture’s only national treasure in 1952, this temple stands out for its remarkable and partially preserved Pure Land garden, a rare example of this style in Japan. The garden, which was popular during the Heian Period, is designed to represent the Buddhist vision of the Pure Land paradise, featuring a tranquil pond, islands, and pavilions that evoke a sense of peace and spirituality. It remains one of the few surviving examples of this traditional garden style, providing visitors with a fascinating window into Japan’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
The temple grounds offer a peaceful stroll around the pond, with serene views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can enjoy the calm atmosphere and reflect on the beauty of the garden. To view the Amidado Hall, which houses five wooden statues, including a lacquered Amida Buddha, an entry fee is required. While entry into the hall itself is not permitted, the temple’s historical importance and its tranquil environment offer a unique cultural experience. Whether exploring the garden or appreciating the temple's spiritual significance, Shiramizu Amidado provides a peaceful retreat for those interested in Japan's religious history and natural beauty.
