Abukumado
Abukumado Cave (あぶくま洞, Abukumadō), located in eastern Fukushima Prefecture, is a stunning limestone cave system that stretches for 3,000 meters and was discovered in 1969. Formed over 80 million years by underground streams, the cave features a fascinating array of stalactites and stalagmites, with the iconic 'Christmas Tree' stalagmite being the largest of its kind in Japan. Approximately 600 meters of the cave are accessible to the public, with well-maintained platforms and paved walkways that make the exploration enjoyable and safe. The main walking route, which takes about an hour to complete, includes some steep staircases and narrow passages, but they are easy to navigate, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the cave.
For those seeking a more thrilling experience, an optional 120-meter exploration course is available for an additional fee. This course leads visitors through a narrow tunnel where some crawling may be required, offering an intimate look at the cave’s hidden depths. The cave’s interior is enhanced by captivating lighting effects, particularly in the Takine Goten hall, which creates a magical atmosphere. After exploring the cave, visitors can relax at nearby restaurants and souvenir shops. Additionally, the Star Village Observatory is within close reach, and from June to July, the area is blanketed with over 50,000 blooming lavender plants, adding to the allure of the location.
