On Fukue Island, buses do operate, but they are primarily used by locals and don’t stop at many of the main tourist attractions. Only a limited number of buses go to places like Daihoji Temple and Imochiura Church, and even those services run infrequently.
The best way to explore Fukue Island is by renting a car. Rental agencies are easy to find near the ferry port and the airport in central Fukue. The island is compact and can be driven around in half a day, with well-maintained main roads and some scenic, winding coastal routes.

Fukue Island Travel Tips
Fukue Island (福江島, Fukue-jima) is the largest and liveliest of the Goto Islands, anchored by the bustling port town of Fukue. As the cultural and economic heart of Goto City—which also includes the nearby islands of Hisaka and Naru—Fukue offers a seamless mix of tradition and modern convenience. The island is home to some of the oldest churches in the archipelago, many tied to the era of Hidden Christians, alongside tranquil temples and historic samurai residences. Walking through Fukue’s neighborhoods reveals layers of history, from stone walls and castle ruins to preserved districts that echo the rhythms of a slower, island life.
Beyond its cultural landmarks, Fukue is a haven for outdoor explorers and nature lovers. Scenic drives lead to secluded coves, volcanic hills, and dramatic cliffs that drop into cobalt-blue seas. The island’s many beaches — like Takahama Beach and Kojushi Beach — are known for their soft sand and crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or simply unwinding. Inland, hiking trails wind through lush forests and up to panoramic viewpoints that reveal the full majesty of the Goto archipelago. Whether you're discovering sacred sites or soaking in the coastal landscapes, Fukue's natural and spiritual beauty invites exploration at every turn.
