Dozaki Church

Recommended
2 of 13 in Fukue Island

Dozaki Church (堂崎教会) is one of the most historically significant landmarks in the Goto Islands, located along a serene stretch of coastline just outside Fukue town on Fukue Island. Originally established by French missionaries shortly after Japan lifted its centuries-long ban on Christianity in 1873, it became the first Western-style church in the region. The current red-brick structure, completed in 1908, is dedicated to the 26 Christian martyrs executed in Nagasaki, and its peaceful waterfront location adds to the atmosphere of reflection and reverence.

What makes Dozaki Church particularly unique is that it also serves as a museum, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the area's Hidden Christian heritage. Inside, carefully curated exhibits display religious artifacts, historical documents, and photographs that tell the story of faith, persecution, and perseverance. Unlike active parish churches, Dozaki provides an immersive and educational experience—ideal for travelers interested in history, culture, and the spiritual legacy that shaped the identity of the Goto Islands.
