Shimabara Peninsula

3 of 4 in Nagasaki Prefecture

The Shimabara Peninsula (島原半島, Shimabara Hantō), located just east of Nagasaki City, is a captivating region where nature and history come together. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, the peninsula is shaped by the presence of Mount Unzen, an active volcano that has profoundly influenced the area’s scenery. Despite the volcanic eruptions that have occurred over the years, including the significant 1990s eruption, the peninsula remains a symbol of resilience and raw natural beauty. Visitors are drawn to the area for its stunning vistas, including lush forests, rocky shores, and pristine hot springs that emerge from the geothermal activity beneath the earth’s surface.

Mount Unzen, part of the Unzen-Amakusa National Park — one of Japan’s oldest and most cherished national parks — offers more than just striking views. The mountain is home to the serene Unzen Onsen, where travelers can soak in therapeutic hot springs surrounded by tranquil landscapes. The peninsula’s historical significance is equally compelling, especially in relation to the Shimabara Rebellion, a pivotal event in Japan’s Edo Period. This uprising, driven by local Christians in the 17th century, marked a dark yet significant chapter in the area’s past. Visitors to the peninsula can immerse themselves in this rich history while exploring its scenic hiking trails and unique cultural heritage.
