3 of 6 in Gunma Prefecture

Manza Onsen (万座温泉) is a mountain hot spring town in Gunma, located 1,800 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Shirane. Its outdoor baths are surrounded by nature, and winter snowfall makes soaking in the hot springs a magical experience. The resort area includes a small ski slope, open from mid-December to early April—ideal for visitors who want to enjoy both skiing and hot springs. In the warmer months, walking trails and scenic viewpoints near the Yubatake (hot water field) offer peaceful outdoor exploration.

The waters of Manza Onsen are among the most sulfuric in Japan and are known for health benefits such as improved blood circulation and metabolism. Ryokan and hotels like Manza Prince Hotel, Manzatei, Manza Kogen Hotel, and Nisshinkan welcome both overnight guests and day visitors. Facilities include beautifully designed indoor and outdoor baths, with some offering mixed-gender bathing. Day-use entry fees range from 1,000 to 1,500 yen.

Getting around

In Manza Onsen, most hotels and attractions are within walking distance, but the roads can be steep and slippery in winter. The summit of Mount Shirane is about a 15-minute drive or bus ride to the north of the town.
