Mount Shirane

Recommended
8 of 10 in Kusatsu Onsen

Mount Shirane (白根山, Shiranesan, also known as Kusatsu-Shirane) is a group of volcanic peaks just outside Kusatsu Onsen. It offers something special in every season—hiking trails in spring and summer, colorful leaves in autumn, and skiing during the snowy winter months.

From mid-April to early November, hikers can explore scenic trails that start from Kusatsu’s town center or the Shirane Resthouse near the summit. The most popular and easiest walk takes under 10 minutes from the resthouse to the stunning Yugama Crater Lake. This vivid, baby blue lake is rich in sulfur and surrounded by rugged mountain views—perfect for photos and fresh mountain air.
