Mikimoto Pearl Island (ミキモト真珠島, Mikimoto Shinjujima) is a picturesque islet in Toba Bay, accessible via a short footbridge from the mainland. Both scenic and educational, the island is best known for its Pearl Museum, which features fascinating bilingual exhibits on pearl cultivation—from oyster seeding to harvesting. Visitors can explore the science, artistry, and global significance of cultured pearls through beautifully curated displays in both Japanese and English. Adjacent to the museum, Pearl Plaza showcases and sells exquisite pearl jewelry, ranging from classic designs to high-end luxury pieces.

The island also honors Mikimoto Kokichi, a Toba-born entrepreneur who made history in 1893 by cultivating the world’s first cultured pearl and opening his first pearl shop in 1899. His legacy is celebrated at the Mikimoto Memorial Hall, where visitors can learn about his groundbreaking innovations and their impact on the global jewelry industry. A visit wouldn’t be complete without watching a live performance by ama—traditional female free divers dressed in white who demonstrate historic oyster-diving techniques. These performances offer a rare glimpse into Japan’s maritime heritage and the enduring cultural traditions of pearl diving.
