The island also honors Mikimoto Kokichi, a Toba-born entrepreneur who made history in 1893 by cultivating the world’s first cultured pearl and opening his first pearl shop in 1899. His legacy is celebrated at the Mikimoto Memorial Hall, where visitors can learn about his groundbreaking innovations and their impact on the global jewelry industry. A visit wouldn’t be complete without watching a live performance by ama—traditional female free divers dressed in white who demonstrate historic oyster-diving techniques.
