Toba Aquarium
Toba Aquarium (鳥羽水族館, Toba Suizokukan) is one of Japan’s most impressive aquariums, set along the scenic shores of Toba Bay and right next to Mikimoto Pearl Island. Renowned for its exceptional diversity of species, the facility houses over 25,000 marine and aquatic animals across 12 themed zones. Each area is thoughtfully designed to replicate natural habitats—from vibrant coral reefs and glowing jellyfish tanks to outdoor enclosures with sea lions, penguins, and playful otters. The exhibits also include amphibians, reptiles, and rare freshwater species, offering a broad and captivating look at aquatic life from around the world.
One of the aquarium’s most unique highlights is that it’s the only place in Japan where visitors can see a dugong, a gentle and rare marine mammal related to the manatee. Throughout the day, educational feedings and entertaining animal shows are held—usually on the hour—adding an interactive element to the experience. Unlike most aquariums, there is no fixed route here, allowing you to explore freely and at your own pace. This flexibility, combined with the rich variety of sea life and the calming bayfront setting, makes Toba Aquarium an ideal destination for families, marine enthusiasts, and curious travelers alike.
