Kiunkaku Former Ryokan

3 of 3 in Atami

Kiunkaku (起雲閣) is a former ryokan nestled in Atami, once a retreat for renowned writers, artists, and political figures. Originally built in 1919 as a private villa, it was later transformed into an upscale inn that blended Japanese craftsmanship with Western elegance. The interiors showcase a distinctive mix of East and West, featuring carved wooden ceilings, stained-glass windows, and richly adorned salons that reflect early 20th-century style.

The buildings are arranged around a traditional Japanese garden that changes with the seasons, offering views of blooming flowers, koi-filled ponds, and artfully placed stone paths. Visitors can explore several preserved rooms, including spacious tatami guest chambers, tea rooms, and communal lounges once frequented by cultural elites. The entire complex exudes quiet charm and offers a glimpse into Japan’s refined ryokan culture during the Taisho and Showa periods.
