To reach Atami Castle from Atami Station, you have two main options. You can take the Yuyu Sightseeing Loop Bus and get off at the Nishikigaura stop. From there, it’s about a 10 to 15-minute uphill walk to the castle. While the bus doesn’t stop directly at the entrance, it’s a scenic and budget-friendly route.
For a more comfortable journey, especially in hot weather or if you’re carrying luggage, a taxi ride is the easiest choice. It takes about 10 minutes from Atami Station and drops you off right at the castle entrance.
Atami Castle
Atami Castle (熱海城) stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the city and bay, offering panoramic views of the coastline, nearby mountains, and Sagami Bay. Though it’s not a historic structure, this castle-style building was constructed in 1959 as a tourist attraction. Inside, each floor features themed exhibits, samurai armor displays, cultural curiosities, and fun photo opportunities. The top floor observatory provides one of the best spots to take in Atami’s scenic beauty from above.
Next to the main tower, visitors will find a quirky trick art museum filled with optical illusions and interactive 3D artwork that’s popular with both kids and adults. The castle grounds are especially attractive in spring, when cherry blossoms cover the hillside in pink, creating a festive atmosphere for hanami picnics. In summer and winter, the area becomes a gathering spot for viewing Atami’s famous fireworks festivals, where bursts of color light up the bay below.
