Fukuura Island

5 of 9 in Matsushima

Fukuura Island (福浦島, Fukuurajima) is one of the few pine-covered islands in Matsushima Bay that visitors can walk to. You reach the island by crossing a striking 252-meter-long red bridge, which costs 200 yen for a round trip. Although the bridge was damaged in the 2011 tsunami, it has been fully repaired and is now safe for visitors.

The island itself is like a natural botanical garden, with quiet walking paths and beautiful views of the bay. It takes about an hour to explore all the trails at a relaxed pace. While there are no major buildings or attractions, the calm atmosphere, fresh air, and scenic lookouts make Fukuura Island a lovely place for a peaceful nature walk.
