Fukuura Island
Fukuura Island (福浦島, Fukuurajima) is one of the few pine-covered islands in Matsushima Bay that visitors can easily walk to. Accessible by a striking 252-meter-long red bridge, the island offers a scenic journey, with a 200 yen fee for a round trip. Although the bridge was severely damaged by the 2011 tsunami, it has since been fully restored, ensuring safety for all who cross it. The vibrant red of the bridge against the backdrop of the bay creates a picturesque entrance to this serene destination.
Once on the island, visitors are greeted by peaceful walking paths that meander through lush greenery, providing stunning views of the bay from various scenic lookouts. The island feels like a natural botanical garden, with a tranquil atmosphere perfect for a leisurely stroll. It takes about an hour to explore all the trails at a relaxed pace, offering a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty. While there are no large buildings or major attractions, the island's calm environment and scenic beauty make it a perfect spot for a quiet nature walk and a moment of reflection.
