2 of 5 in Hiraizumi

Motsuji Temple (毛越寺, Mōtsūji) in Hiraizumi is renowned for its stunning Pure Land garden, one of the few remaining examples of this type of garden in Japan. Inspired by Buddhist concepts of paradise, the garden features a large central pond surrounded by a peaceful walking path. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil 500-meter loop around the pond, where the view changes with each step, offering a fresh perspective of the landscape in every season. The design of the garden reflects the spiritual ideals of the Heian Period, symbolizing harmony between nature and the Buddhist vision of paradise. The serene beauty of the space continues to captivate visitors today, just as it did centuries ago.

Once a significant site for the Tendai sect, Motsuji was home to numerous grand buildings, most of which have since disappeared. However, the temple's foundations still remain, marked with informative signs that help visitors imagine its former splendor. The ruins of the temple inspired the famous haiku of the Japanese poet Basho, reflecting on the transient nature of greatness. Beyond the garden and ruins, visitors can also explore Motsuji’s remaining structures, including the Hondo (main hall), the Cultural Assets Repository, which houses historical treasures, and the Kaizando, a hall dedicated to honoring important Buddhist leaders and the Fujiwara lords who once supported the temple.
