Geibikei Gorge

3 of 5 in Hiraizumi

Geibikei Gorge (猊鼻渓), located in Iwate Prefecture near Hiraizumi, is a peaceful destination offering a scenic 90-minute boat ride through dramatic cliffs and distinctive rock formations. Passengers sit on floor mats inside traditional flat-bottomed boats, guided by experienced boatmen who use poles to navigate the calm waters. The boat ride follows a tranquil one-kilometer stretch of the river, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty. Along the way, there is a brief stop to explore the gorge further, with a chance to see the famous lion-nose-shaped rock that gave Geibikei its name — a unique feature that adds to the area’s charm.

The gorge offers stunning scenery year-round, with particularly remarkable views during the changing seasons. Late October showcases vibrant autumn colors, while mid-May brings the delicate beauty of wisteria in bloom. As you glide along the river, you can take part in a local tradition by tossing small lucky stones into a hole in the cliff across the river, hoping for good fortune. Carps and ducks swim near the boat, and you can even feed them with snacks sold on board. Tours run roughly once an hour, and the boatmen serenade passengers with traditional songs. After the ride, visitors can unwind and enjoy souvenir shopping or dining at the shops and restaurants near the pier, making for a peaceful and fulfilling visit to this natural wonder.
