Tamagawa Onsen is accessible by local bus or car from both the north and south. However, during winter (late November to mid-April), only the southern route remains open.
From Tazawako Station and Lake Tazawa, direct buses run to Tamagawa Onsen every 1–2 hours (80 minutes, 1,490 yen) outside of winter. In winter, buses only operate to Shin-Tamagawa Onsen, with limited service. During this period, cars cannot reach Tamagawa Onsen either, so visitors must park at Lake Tazawa and continue by bus. For the rest of the year, you can drive from Tazawako Station to the onsen in about one hour.
From Kazuno-Hanawa Station, a bus runs to Tamagawa Onsen from mid-April to mid-October. However, this service did not operate in 2023. In winter, the northern access road to Tamagawa Onsen is closed.

Tamagawa Onsen Travel Tips
Tamagawa Onsen (玉川温泉), located in the picturesque mountains of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, is renowned for having Japan’s most acidic hot spring waters, with a pH level close to 1. This unique onsen also contains hokutolite, a rare naturally radioactive stone believed by some to offer health benefits, including potential cancer prevention. These distinctive features attract visitors seeking its reputed healing properties, while traditional onsen guests come to enjoy the natural scenery and relaxing atmosphere.
The resort centers around a single ryokan, offering simple rooms and a public bath, and welcomes both overnight and day guests. While it is particularly popular among health-conscious visitors, general tourists are also invited to experience Tamagawa Onsen’s mineral-rich waters. The ryokan is closed during winter, from early November to mid-April, due to heavy snowfall.
