Usa Shrine

Recommended
2 of 2 in Kunisaki Peninsula

Usa Shrine (宇佐神宮, Usa Jingū) is one of Japan’s most important and impressive Shinto shrines, founded in the 8th century at the foot of the Kunisaki Peninsula. Revered as the head shrine of over 40,000 Hachiman shrines across the country, it honors Hachiman, the powerful god of archery, war, and protection. The shrine is also closely associated with Emperor Ojin, who is enshrined here as a deity. Its main hall, designated a national treasure, is the original example of the distinctive Hachiman-zukuri architectural style—characterized by two interconnected halls under a single roof, encircled by an elegant covered corridor.

The sprawling shrine grounds invite visitors to explore a blend of nature and history. The complex is divided into upper and lower precincts, each with impressive structures, tranquil ponds, and picturesque walking trails. Along the broad, shop-lined approach, guests pass through vivid vermilion torii gates and can discover unique features such as the thatched Kurehashi Bridge and a traditional noh theater set on a lotus pond. With its harmonious mix of sacred atmosphere, cultural treasures, and natural beauty, Usa Shrine offers a memorable experience for travelers seeking to connect with Japan’s spiritual heritage.
