You can take a bus from Seibu-Chichibu Station to Mitsumine-jinja (75 minutes, ¥950) or from Mitsumineguchi Station (55 minutes, ¥690). If you prefer to hike, take a bus to the Owa stop, then follow a steep, rocky forest trail for about 3 hours.

Mitsumine Shrine
Mitsumine Shrine (三峯神社, Mitsumine-jinja) is nestled high on Mount Mitsumine in Chichibu, surrounded by lush forests and expansive mountain vistas. The shrine is renowned for its serene and spiritual ambiance, with its ornate architecture being one of its most striking features. The gates and halls, especially the impressive Zuishinmon Gate, are adorned with intricate, colorful carvings that rival the grandeur of Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine. These detailed works of art give the site a rich, almost mystical atmosphere, making it a visually captivating destination.
A unique feature of the shrine is its rare triple torii gate, which stands proudly at the entrance, flanked by stone wolves instead of the usual lion-dog statues. The wolves are symbolic of the now-extinct Japanese wolf, believed to guard against misfortune. Visitors can learn more about the shrine’s history and its connection to the Japanese wolves at a nearby treasure hall, which houses artifacts and imperial relics. The sacred grounds also feature a scenic pavilion with breathtaking panoramic views, and smaller shrines are scattered throughout, inviting exploration. Easily accessible by bus, car, or mountain trails, Mitsumine Shrine seamlessly blends nature, art, and spiritual heritage, making it a must-visit site for those seeking a deeper connection with Japan’s rich cultural traditions.
