Mitsumine Shrine

1 of 7 in Chichibu

Mitsumine Shrine (三峯神社, Mitsumine-jinja) sits high atop Mount Mitsumine in Chichibu, surrounded by dense forests and sweeping mountain views. Known for its spiritual atmosphere, the shrine features intricate, colorful carvings on its gates and halls—especially the grand Zuishinmon Gate. These ornate details, comparable to those at Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine, create a sense of richness that makes the site visually stunning.

At the entrance, a rare triple torii gate stands proudly, flanked by stone wolves instead of the usual lion-dog statues. The shrine honors the now-extinct Japanese wolf, believed to protect against misfortune. A nearby treasure hall showcases the shrine’s history, wolf-related artifacts, and imperial connections. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views from a scenic pavilion and explore smaller shrines scattered across the sacred grounds. Easily accessible by bus, car, or mountain trails, Mitsumine Shrine offers a unique blend of nature, art, and spiritual heritage.
