Mikumari Shrine

5 of 5 in Yoshino

Mikumari Shrine (吉野水分神社, Yoshino Mikumari Jinja) is a tranquil and historic Shinto shrine located in the upper Kami Senbon area of Yoshinoyama. Dedicated to Ameno Mikumari, the goddess of water and childbirth, the shrine has long been a place of reverence for those seeking fertility and safe delivery. Visitors come to pray for blessings, as the goddess is believed to offer protection to women during childbirth. Inside the shrine, visitors can find ancient mikoshi (portable shrines) and sacred artifacts, showcasing the shrine’s rich spiritual history and significance.

The main hall of Mikumari Shrine, built in 1604 by Toyotomi Hideyori, is a stunning example of Momoyama Period architecture. Its elegant design is enhanced by the unique layered bark roof, which was meticulously restored in 2011. As one of only four important Mikumari shrines in Japan, it holds special cultural and spiritual value. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mikumari Shrine offers a serene escape where visitors can immerse themselves in both natural beauty and deep spiritual significance.
