Mikumari Shrine
Mikumari Shrine (吉野水分神社, Yoshino Mikumari Jinja) is a peaceful and historic Shinto shrine located in the upper Kami Senbon area of Yoshinoyama. It’s dedicated to Ameno Mikumari, a goddess of water and childbirth, known for bringing fertility and safe delivery to those who visit and pray. Inside, you’ll find ancient portable shrines (mikoshi) and sacred artifacts that highlight its spiritual importance.
The main hall, built in 1604 by Toyotomi Hideyori, reflects the elegant architecture of the Momoyama Period. With its beautiful, layered bark roof restored in 2011, the shrine’s design is both unique and refined. As one of four important Mikumari shrines in Japan and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, this hidden gem offers visitors a blend of natural calm, cultural depth, and quiet spiritual charm.
