You can reach Takao from central Kyoto by JR buses or Kyoto City Bus. JR buses depart from Kyoto Station every 20–30 minutes, cost 230 yen one way, and take about 50 minutes. You can also board these buses at JR Nijo Station or Ninnaji. JR buses are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and some other JR West passes. Kyoto City Bus number 8 departs from Shijo-Karasuma every 30–60 minutes, costs 230 yen one way, and takes about 45 minutes.
In Takao, buses stop at the Takao bus stop (高雄), which is convenient for visiting Jingo-ji and Saimyo-ji Temples, and at the Toganoo bus stop (栂ノ尾), which is closest to Kozan-ji Temple. Some JR buses continue further into the valley beyond Toganoo.

Takao
Takao (高雄), located about an hour north of Kyoto’s city center, is a tranquil mountain retreat known for its rich history, natural beauty, and peaceful atmosphere. Tucked away in a forested valley along the Kiyotaki River, Takao is home to three significant temples: Jingo-ji, Kozan-ji, and Saimyo-ji. Jingo-ji, founded in the early Heian period, is particularly famous for its ancient pagoda and scenic views over the surrounding mountains. Kozan-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for housing the Chōjū-giga, Japan’s oldest known manga, while Saimyo-ji offers a quieter, more intimate temple experience. The area is also dotted with tea houses and small shops that cater to visitors, providing traditional snacks and souvenirs in a serene, natural setting.
While Takao offers year-round appeal, it is especially breathtaking during mid to late November, when the autumn foliage transforms the mountains into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and gold. Photographers and nature lovers flock here to capture the stunning scenery, while hikers enjoy the well-maintained trails connecting the temples and surrounding forests. In spring, fresh greenery blankets the hills, and in summer, the cool mountain air offers a refreshing escape from Kyoto’s heat. Whether you’re exploring centuries-old temples, strolling along the riverbanks, or simply enjoying the serenity of nature, Takao offers a perfect blend of cultural heritage and scenic beauty, making it a highly recommended day trip from Kyoto.
