Kounoyu Onsen is located near the entrance to the Kinosaki Ropeway. From Kinosaki Station, it’s a short walk or a quick taxi ride to the ropeway station, and Kōno-yu is just a short walk from the ropeway entrance.
Kounoyu Onsen
Kounoyu Onsen (鴻の湯, Kōno-yu), nestled near the entrance to the Kinosaki Ropeway, is one of the most storied bathhouses in Kinosaki Onsen. According to legend, an injured stork once rested in these waters and was miraculously healed, inspiring the establishment of the town’s hot spring tradition. As the oldest of Kinosaki’s seven public baths, Kōno-yu has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, yet it continues to embody a sense of quiet heritage and gentle reverence. The bathhouse’s traditional architecture and subtle atmosphere make it feel deeply connected to the town’s origins and natural landscape.
Outside, the rotenburo (open-air bath) is framed by tranquil forests that shift beautifully with the seasons—lush green in summer, fiery red in autumn, and softly dusted with snow in winter. Soaking here offers the feeling of being cradled in nature, with mountain air and birdsong adding to the peaceful experience. The surrounding neighborhood is calm and residential, with small paths and shrines nearby, making it an ideal stop for those who enjoy slow walks and quiet corners of the town. Kōno-yu invites visitors to immerse not only in warm spring water, but also in the spirit and legend that gave Kinosaki its onsen identity.
