In Izumo, the main train station is Izumoshi Station, which connects to Matsue and other parts of Japan via JR trains. You can also take the local Ichibata Railway from here to reach nearby destinations such as Izumo Taisha and Matsue.
Most tourist attractions, including the famous Izumo Taisha Shrine, are located north of the city center. You can get there in about 25 minutes by bus or by taking the Ichibata Railway (with one transfer). If you're arriving by air, Izumo Airport is just outside the city and offers bus service to Izumoshi Station, with a travel time of around 30 minutes.

Izumo Travel Tips
Izumo (出雲), a tranquil city nestled along the San’in Coast of the Sea of Japan, is steeped in spiritual depth and ancient tradition. At its heart stands Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest and most venerated Shinto shrines, believed to predate many of the nation’s major religious sites. Dedicated to Ōkuninushi-no-Ōkami—the deity of marriage and harmonious relationships—the shrine stands as a powerful symbol of divine connection and cultural continuity. Surrounded by towering pine trees and sacred pathways, it offers a profoundly moving experience that continues to draw both pilgrims and travelers. According to legend, all of Japan’s Shinto gods gather here each October, making it a uniquely significant center of myth and ritual.
Izumo’s cultural richness extends well beyond its iconic shrine. The city is also home to the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, where artifacts and interactive exhibits illuminate the area’s mythological and archaeological heritage. Its location makes Izumo an excellent base for exploring nearby Matsue — a historic castle town renowned for samurai traditions, tea culture, and scenic charm. Whether you're captivated by Japanese mythology, timeless architecture, or the quiet spirituality of the countryside, Izumo offers an immersive journey into the roots of Japan’s sacred legacy.
