Hinomisaki lighthouse

6 of 8 in Izumo

Hinomisaki Lighthouse (出雲日御碕灯台), just a 10-minute walk from Hinomisaki Shrine, is a striking coastal landmark and a must-see for visitors to the area. Towering at 43.65 meters (143 feet), it is the tallest stone-built lighthouse in Japan. Painted a crisp white, the structure stands in bold contrast to the deep blue sea and rugged cliffs around it. For a modest fee of 300 yen, visitors can ascend a narrow spiral staircase to the top and enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of the Sea of Japan and the dramatic Izumo coastline.

Beyond the lighthouse, nearby observation decks and coastal trails offer equally breathtaking vantage points—perfect for photography, quiet reflection, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze and the sound of crashing waves. On clear days, the view stretches endlessly across the water, with sunsets that bathe the sky in vivid shades of orange and gold. Whether you're a nature lover, a lighthouse enthusiast, or a traveler in search of scenic serenity, Hinomisaki Lighthouse promises a memorable encounter with the coastal beauty of western Japan.
