Bitchu-Takahashi Travel Tips
Takahashi (高梁), often referred to as Bitchu-Takahashi to differentiate it from other cities, is a picturesque town nestled within the mountainous heart of Okayama Prefecture. Renowned for its scenic beauty, Takahashi is home to Matsuyama Castle, one of Japan’s most historic landmarks. The castle, perched on a mountaintop, stands as the only remaining original structure of its kind in the country. As Japan’s oldest surviving mountaintop castle, Matsuyama offers visitors a rare opportunity to step back in time while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. Its well-preserved architecture and strategic position reflect the region's military significance during the feudal era.
At the foot of the mountain, Takahashi’s charming old town invites visitors to explore its traditional streets, where samurai residences and merchant houses from the Edo period still stand. The district offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, with local museums, old townscapes, and historic temples dotting the area. Among them is the tranquil Raikyuji Temple, renowned for its exquisite Zen garden, meticulously designed by the famed Kobori Enshu. This serene space, along with other cultural landmarks, creates a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich history and natural beauty of Takahashi, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a mix of culture, history, and stunning landscapes.
Getting around
In Takahashi, the old town is small and easy to explore on foot, just a short walk from the train station. It’s a great place for a relaxing stroll.
The castle sits on a steep hill north of the town. If you enjoy hiking, you can walk up, but most people prefer taking a taxi to the parking lot near the top. Since the pandemic, local buses are no longer a reliable option for getting around the city.
