Matsuyama Castle (松山城, Matsuyamajō), perched atop a steep mountain north of Takahashi, is the oldest surviving castle in Japan. Built in 1240, it is not only the oldest but also the highest of Japan’s twelve original castles, standing at an impressive 430 meters above sea level. Its strategic mountaintop location was designed for defense, offering a commanding view of the surrounding area and making it a nearly impenetrable fortress during feudal times. Today, the castle remains remarkably well-preserved, providing a rare glimpse into Japan’s feudal history and architectural heritage.

To reach the castle keep, visitors must hike a 20-minute trail from the parking lot, passing through the castle’s ancient defense walls while enjoying panoramic views of the town below. The keep itself is smaller than most, with only two stories, but it offers a fascinating interior, with displays that showcase the castle’s history and ongoing preservation efforts. In winter, the castle is often surrounded by clouds, creating a mystical atmosphere. A nearby observation deck provides the perfect vantage point, allowing visitors to experience the breathtaking sight of Matsuyama Castle seemingly floating above a sea of clouds, creating a truly unforgettable view.
