Shinshoji Temple

2 of 2 in Fukuyama

Shinshoji Temple (神勝寺, Shinshōji), located about 15 kilometers southwest of Fukuyama, offers an immersive Zen retreat nestled in serene natural surroundings. Established in 1965, this modern Zen Buddhist temple is embraced by forested hills and centered around a tranquil pond, creating an environment that fosters mindfulness and reflection. The spacious grounds feature beautifully maintained walking paths, traditional architecture, and teahouses that harmonize with the landscape. A standout feature is Kohtei, a striking contemporary art installation shaped like a wooden ship, which uses light and spatial design to evoke a deeply meditative sensory experience. Visitors can also explore a small yet compelling museum housing calligraphy and artwork by Zen master Hakuin Ekaku, celebrated for his expressive brushwork and influential teachings.

The temple offers various hands-on ways to engage with Zen practice, including zazen (seated meditation) and shakyo (sutra copying), with a special one-day Zen program available for those seeking a deeper experience. After a session of quiet contemplation, guests can enjoy a meal at the temple’s restaurant, known for its signature Shinshoji Udon—thick, chewy noodles served with a flavorful dipping broth unique to the temple. Scattered across the grounds are peaceful teahouses offering matcha and traditional sweets, perfect for restful moments. With its harmonious blend of Buddhist tradition, modern creativity, and natural beauty, Shinshoji Temple provides a revitalizing spiritual journey that resonates with both Zen seekers and lovers of art and nature alike.
