Shiraito Waterfall

5 of 5 in Karuizawa

Shiraito Waterfall (白糸の滝, Shiraito no Taki), located in the lush forests north of Karuizawa, is celebrated for its unique and striking appearance. Although it is only three meters high, the waterfall stretches an impressive 70 meters across, with water cascading down like delicate white threads over the rocks. What makes Shiraito Waterfall particularly fascinating is that it is formed by groundwater that rises from volcanic layers rather than from a river, providing a constant flow of water regardless of the weather. This natural phenomenon allows the waterfall to maintain a steady and peaceful flow throughout the year.

The name Shiraito no Taki, meaning "the waterfall of white threads," aptly captures the waterfall’s delicate, almost ethereal look. It is especially stunning in the summer when the surrounding vegetation is lush and vibrant, creating a beautiful contrast with the flowing water. In the autumn, the waterfall becomes a popular spot for visitors who come to admire the breathtaking fall foliage that frames the falls. A serene and picturesque destination, Shiraito Waterfall offers a tranquil retreat, making it one of the must-see attractions in Karuizawa.
