Tojinbo
Tojinbo (東尋坊, Tōjinbō) is a dramatic one-kilometer stretch of jagged sea cliffs north of Fukui City, shaped over time by the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan. The cliffs, rising up to 30 meters high, feature rare hexagonal and pentagonal rock columns seen in only a few places worldwide. You can enjoy views of the rugged coast on foot via trails or from the sea on a 30-minute sightseeing boat ride, though cruises are canceled during rough weather.
Walking paths along the cliffs take you close to steep drops with no railings—so step carefully. The legend of a monk named Tojinbo adds a mysterious air to the area. Near the entrance, restaurants and shops sell fresh seafood like crab and local souvenirs. A short walk north leads to a peaceful fishing village and a red bridge to Oshima, where you’ll find a shrine and more rocky views. For a full panorama, head up the 55-meter tall Tojinbo Tower, although the cliffs aren't visible from its top.
