From Tokyo to Fukui

  • By train

  • From Tokyo you can travel to Fukui by Hokuriku Shinkansen in just under 3 hours. The one-way trip costs around 16,000 yen and is fast and comfortable. This route is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass.

    There are two train options. Kagayaki trains are the fastest but only run in the morning, late afternoon, and evening, and you need to reserve a seat. Hakutaka trains are slightly slower, taking about 3.5 hours, and also offer non-reserved seats.

From Osaka to Fukui

  • By train

  • From Osaka, you can reach Fukui in just under 2 hours by taking the JR Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga (80 minutes), then transferring to the Hokuriku Shinkansen (20 minutes). The trip costs about 7,500 yen one way and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, Kansai Hokuriku Area Pass, and Hokuriku Arch Pass. International tourists can also buy a discounted ticket for 6,000 yen. Seat reservations are required on the Thunderbird train.

  • By bus

  • From Osaka, you can take a highway bus to Fukui Station from Umeda or Shin-Osaka. The ride takes about 3.5 hours and costs 4,700 yen one way. A round-trip ticket is available for 8,500 yen and must be used within 10 days.

From Kyoto to Fukui

  • By train

  • From Kyoto, take the JR Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga (about 50 minutes), then switch to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for a 20-minute ride to Fukui. The whole trip takes under 90 minutes and costs around 6,000 yen. It’s fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, Kansai Hokuriku Area Pass, and Hokuriku Arch Pass. International visitors can buy a discounted ticket for 5,000 yen. Seats must be reserved on the Thunderbird train.

From Kanazawa to Fukui

From Kaga Onsen to Fukui

  • By train

  • From Kaga Onsen, you can take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Fukui in just 15 minutes for around 2,500–3,000 yen, with 1–2 trains per hour; this route is fully covered by major rail passes. You can also take a direct local train in about 35 minutes for 760 yen, but this option is not covered by JR passes.
