4 of 5 in Kagoshima Prefecture

Tokunoshima (徳之島), part of the Satsunan island chain in Kagoshima Prefecture, offers a serene subtropical getaway known for its untouched nature and laid-back island culture. The island’s landscape is defined by dramatic coastlines, white-sand beaches, and verdant forests teeming with native flora. Amamigunto National Park stretches across parts of the island, sheltering quiet beaches ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing—especially from late June to October. Tokunoshima is divided into three main towns: Amagi in the west, Tokunoshima in the east, and Isen in the south, each offering a distinct atmosphere and easy access to local attractions.

Cultural traditions thrive alongside the natural beauty, with one of the island’s most iconic features being tōgyū, or bull sumo—where two bulls engage in a test of strength without human interference. This centuries-old sport is celebrated in local arenas and festivals, reflecting the community’s deep-rooted heritage. The Tokunoshima Triathlon, held annually in June, transforms the island into a lively arena for endurance athletes while welcoming visitors to enjoy the vibrant energy and hospitality. Scenic drives, seaside cafés, local shochu, and cozy guesthouses round out the experience, making Tokunoshima a rewarding destination for travelers looking to connect with Japan’s island culture beyond the mainstream.

Getting there

Google Maps

Tokunoshima is a quiet island with limited public transportation, so getting around by bus can be a bit challenging. Since buses run infrequently, the easiest and most convenient way to explore the island is by renting a car. A few rental car agencies are available at Tokunoshima Airport and near Kametoku Port.

The island has two main bus routes. One connects the airport with the town center on the east coast, operating every 1 to 2 hours. The other route runs from the central town area through Isen Town along the southern coast to Amagi’s town center, with buses arriving every 3 to 4 hours. A few smaller local routes are also available, but they operate even less frequently. Bus fares vary depending on the distance traveled, ranging from 120 to 1,230 yen.
