1 of 1 in Wakayama Prefecture

Kumano (熊野) is a peaceful region at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, known for its deep spiritual roots and beautiful nature. It’s home to the famous Kumano Sanzan—three sacred shrines: Hongu Taisha, Nachi Taisha, and Hayatama Taisha. For more than a thousand years, people have walked the Kumano Kodo, a network of ancient trails connecting these holy sites, where myths of Japan’s earliest emperors live on.

But Kumano is more than its spiritual side. The area spans both Wakayama and Mie prefectures and offers relaxing hot springs in Shirahama and Nachi-Katsuura, scenic views in Kushimoto and Kumano City, and welcoming coastal towns. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the region also connects with other sacred places like Koyasan and Yoshino, making it perfect for travelers seeking both history and calm.
