Chogakuji Temple (長岳寺, Chōgaku-ji) is a serene and picturesque temple known for its seasonal gardens and rich cultural heritage. Founded in 824 by the renowned monk Kobo Daishi, the temple boasts a grand wooden gate and bell tower, framed by vibrant azalea hedges that bloom with the seasons. The temple grounds are home to a tranquil pond and various flowers that change throughout the year, creating a peaceful environment that attracts visitors looking for a moment of reflection amidst nature’s beauty.

Inside the main hall, visitors can admire stunning bronze Buddhist statues and a rare painting depicting hell by the 16th-century artist Kano Sanraku, which is on display from late October to November. One of the temple’s most celebrated events is the Lantern Festival, held on the third weekend of September. During this event, the temple is illuminated by the soft glow of hundreds of lanterns and candles, transforming the space into a magical and serene nighttime experience.
