13 of 16 in Shimonoseki

Chofu is located about eight kilometers inland from the city center and offers a rich historical experience for visitors. Once home to the Mori Clan’s castle town, it holds significant cultural value as part of the region’s feudal past. Although the original castle was destroyed in 1615 due to a feudal law limiting the number of castles in each domain, many historical structures have survived, offering a glimpse into life during the samurai era. Notable landmarks such as the Chofu Mori Residence, a preserved samurai residence, and Kozanji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest Zen temples, reflect the area’s aristocratic and spiritual heritage.

As you explore Chofu today, you can stroll through the district’s tranquil streets and discover a range of well-preserved buildings that showcase the area’s feudal legacy. The district's scenic charm, coupled with its rich history, creates an immersive experience that allows visitors to step back in time. Sites like Chofu Garden, with its meticulously landscaped grounds, and Iminomiya Shrine, a site with deep historical roots, enhance the area’s serene atmosphere, making Chofu a must-visit for those eager to explore Japan’s samurai heritage and cultural traditions.
