3 of 7 in Saga Prefecture

Karatsu (唐津), nestled in the scenic Saga Prefecture along Japan’s western coastline, offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, located just 50 kilometers from Fukuoka. This charming city was once a bustling port connecting Japan, Korea, and China, and its rich maritime heritage is still evident today. The highlight of Karatsu is its majestic Karatsu Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the sea. Visitors can admire the impressive architecture and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. Each November, the city comes alive with the vibrant Karatsu Kunchi Festival, a lively event featuring traditional floats, parades, and cultural performances that showcase the city’s deep-rooted traditions.

Just a short distance away, the tranquil Higashi Matsuura Peninsula offers unspoiled coastal beauty, with rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers. History buffs will also find fascination in the remnants of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle, constructed during his Korean campaign in the late 16th century.
